Default USAF B-52 to outlive younger aircraft

The venerable USAF B-52 heavy bomber - first conceived in the 1950s will soldier on up to its 100th birthday if Air Force planning goes as usual. Younger B-1 and Stealth B-2s now are planned to be retired by 2030(s) - not the 2058 as earlier planned.

As a Vietnam vet - the 'higher tailed' B-52D model will forever be associated with that conflict. The last bombers off the production line in the 1960s were the B-52H model - with about 90 still in service (of the total of all 744 B-52s built) and others 'retired' in storage or used for cannibalization of parts. One B-52H was recently taken out of desert storage and returned to flying status.

They've been modernized countless times and will be continually modified to remain in survival able active service.

That longevity is a real testament to the design, engineering and overall construction of that air frame. Wonder why the B52's younger brothers are scheduled to be retired earlier than planned?
