For those who wonder..

Shinola was THE brown shoe polish used through WWII and Korea to shine the boots of our brown shoe army and the boondockers (once the 'fur' was burned off) of the USMC ...

Hence came the slogan of those with limited sense of smell and probably IQ as not being able to tell 'sh!t' from Shinola'
